Plans to enhance Gunbower Forest flooding.

Flooding Enhancement for Gunbower Forest

Cohuna, Victoria North Central Catchment Management Authority and Department of Sustainability and Environment

Gunbower Forest is a floodplain wetland of international importance on the River Murray near Echuca. Regular flooding is essential to the health and diversity of forest. As the diversion of water from the river has increased, the frequency of flood events decreased, resulting in poor tree health and depleted biodiversity.

In the late 1990s, the North Central CMA and DSE began a long-term project to enhance flooding in the forest.

Ecological Associates staff have assisted the program over this period. A Scoping Study in 2000 laid the foundations of the project by quantifying water requirements. Subsequent projects have identified water management options, designed programs to monitor ecological responses and designed structures to deliver the water required.
